Here’s my real fear: The race is tightening, and every time a fresh dump of e-mails lands in the news Clinton’s lead shrinks. Her lead has now been cut in half since her post-convention bounce. While I don’t think those of us who fear and dread a Trump presidency need to update our Valium prescriptions quite yet, we have to remember that the race is far from over While the whole Mexican brouhaha last week should be a clear indication of Trump’s instability, on the whole he’s doing a little better about not providing a daily circus for the masses. The theory is that Kellyanne Conway, one of his new handlers, seems to have been able to calm him down some, and since the bar is set so low for his behavior (Hey, he’s being presidential! He didn’t insult, degrade or humiliate anyone today!) he gets points for what should be, like, normal behavior. Folks, we don’t want him to “pivot.” That’s ridiculous. We want to see him for what he actually is. So what if he’s persuaded to keep a lid on it for the few weeks until the election? Believe me, as he’d say, he won’t be able to keep it up for four years. Or four months.
So, as I said yesterday, Clinton’s feet need to be held to the fire on her whole secrecy thing. She needs to address the e-mail issue fairly and squarely, and perhaps lay out a plan for making sure this doesn’t happen in the White House, where, I devoutly hope, she’s going to be come next January. (Yes, that means that Bill Clinton is going to be back in the White House too. We’ll hope that he keeps a lid on it.)
PS. One of the main reasons why people get so upset with me for saying I’m voting for Clinton is her stand on abortion, and I sympathize and agree. Clinton’s position on this issue is one of the biggest reasons for keeping a Republican majority in Congress. Vital, vital, vital. Vote, vote, vote. Maybe I’ll have a bumper sticker made up that says, “Put Her In, Then Rein Her in.” Whaddya think? Anyone out there want to take this project on?
